Rio School District hopes this section will help parents feel confident and prepared to support their children throughout the cross-country season.

We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before your child's race starts. This will give you enough time to check in, warm up, and review the racecourse.

Your child should bring:
- Proper running shoes
- A water bottle
- A light snack (like a banana or granola bar)
- Their race bib (if already assigned)
- Comfortable, breathable athletic clothing

Runners should wear lightweight, breathable clothing appropriate for running and weather conditions. Proper running shoes are a must to avoid injury. Please avoid heavy or restrictive clothing.

The race distances are as follows:
- Grades K-2: 500 yards
- Grades 3-5: 1 mile
- Middle school students: 3K (1.86 miles)

While parents can't run with their children during the official races, we encourage parents to participate in our "Community Run" after select races on October 30 and November 15.

Ensure they have a balanced meal 1-2 hours before the race, make sure they stay hydrated throughout the day, and encourage them to warm up using dynamic stretches. Remind them to pace themselves and have fun!

Parking will be available at the designated areas near Rio Vista and Rio Del Mar. Please follow the signs and parking attendants for guidance.

Race results will be available online and posted at the event. We will also send updates via email and provide a link to access individual and team standings.

Yes! Healthy snacks like fruit, energy bars, or nuts are great options to bring. However, please check for any specific dietary restrictions for your child’s teammates before sharing.

We welcome parents and community members as volunteers. Opportunities include being course marshals, water station attendants, timing helpers, and more. Please visit our volunteer registration page to sign up!

Trained first-aid personnel will be on-site to assist with any minor injuries. In case of more serious injuries, emergency protocols will be followed.

Before the race: A light meal or snack like toast, fruit, or a granola bar 1-2 hours before the race for energy.
After the race: Hydration is key. Offer water or a sports drink, followed by a healthy snack like fruit or a small sandwich.

Encourage your child to drink water throughout the day leading up to the race, especially if the weather is hot. Remind them to sip water after the race, too.
