Expanded learning programs operate at all nine school campuses in the Rio School District. The term “expanded learning” includes support and services provided after school, before school, or any time outside of regular school time.
After School Education and Safety Program (ASES)- Rio EXL
Funding for the expanded learning programs at Rio del Mar, Rio del Norte, Rio del Valle, Rio Lindo, Rio Plaza, Rio Real, and Rio Rosales comes from the California After School Education and Safety (ASES) Program. The Rio School District provides ASES programming in collaboration with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme. Enrichment opportunities include social emotional learning, homework support, arts, music, physical fitness, and recreation. Enrichment activities vary by site.
The Rio School District employs one site coordinator to oversee programming at each school. Boys and Girls Club helps provide classroom staffing. Each ASES site has an academic liaison who is a credentialed educator who works closely with expanded learning staff to support students’ academic needs. Rio School District After School Program Site Coordinators and Boys and Girls Club youth development professionals meet the minimum qualifications of district instructional aides, and receive training and professional development in areas such as literacy, social emotional learning, and restorative justice.
Since schools in the Rio School District closed in March 2020, the ASES EXL program has continued to provide virtual academic and social emotional support as well as academic enrichment.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the California Department of Education has waived the usual hours of operation requirements under Senate Bill 98.
The State of California requires participating students to meet the attendance requirements as outlined in the registration packet. Students may attend the program on the days that they attend class in-person on their campuses only.
Enrollment is open throughout the year, depending on availability. Priority is given first to homeless and foster youth and, next, to students at risk of not meeting state and district benchmarks. To apply, complete the online application. If accepted, you will receive a notification from the After School Program Site Coordinator. You will also receive a registration packet to complete before your child can attend the program in person.
ASES also provides a six-hour summer program for five weeks. Please contact the school’s site coordinator for more information.
