Virtual Independent Study Program

The purpose of the Independent Study (IS) program is to provide an optional alternative instructional program for students whose needs may be best met through study outside of the regular classroom setting (RSD Board Policy 6158). Independent Study (15 days or more) shall offer a means of individualizing the educational plan to serve students who desire an independent educational experience.

Students will be permitted to enroll in Independent Study only if it is determined to be an appropriate alternative. Students with an IEP or 504 plan may participate in the independent study program if the IEP or 504 plan specifically provides for it.

A tiered reengagement process will be used to determine ongoing participation in the independent study program for any student who has three or more days of non-participation in a four week period (ex. 3 days of missing assignments equals 3 days of non-participation) and/or who miss more than half of the synchronous instructional offerings in a four week period. If parents/guardians are not able to help support requirements of the independent study agreement, the student will be required to return to in-person instruction at the student’s home school. Local programs such as counseling outreach, referrals, parent-teacher conferences and School Attendance Review Team (SART) meetings will be available to address chronic absenteeism.
