According to the History-Social Science framework from the state of California, social studies “offers students the opportunity to learn about the world and their place in it, think critically, read, write, and communicate clearly. History, civics and government, geography, and economics are integral to the mission of preparing California’s children for college, careers, and civic life.”
In sixth grade, students learn about ancient history, from the earliest humans through the Roman Empire, focusing the development of societies and civilizations. In seventh grade, students study medieval world history, with an emphasis on the increasing interconnectedness of the world in the period between 300 and 1700. Eight graders gain an understanding of American history from the colonial period through the late 19th century, examining questions about freedom and being an American.
